Petrozavodsk State University, academy@petrsu.ruAnnotation: The article is devoted to the study of the myth of Nicholas Stavrogin in the novel "Demons"by F. M. Dostoevsky. The aim of the article is to characterize Stavrogin from the point of view of the hero-mask. The personality of the character is analyzed and on the basis of the received characteristic the analogy with heroes of works of Homer and Sophocles is carried out. Particular attention is paid to the study of the episodes of the novel, which reveals the image of the hero. The study showed that Nikolai Stavrogin is a dual personality. The analysis of various episodes, in particular the Chapter "at Tikhon" reveals the mystery of the character's personality. The ambiguous behavior of the hero, the search for himself and, ultimately, the self-denial that led Stavrogin to suicide - all this gives us the right to classify him as a hero-masks, and a superficial analysis of the heroes of Sophocles and Homer, ranked in this group of heroes, in turn, only confirms the conclusion.
