Edith Södergran’s concept of free verse
Petrozavodsk State University, alingord1403@gmail.comAnnotation: The article is focused on analysing the specificity of free verse in Edith Södergran’s poetry. Edith Södergran was a Swedish-speaking poet and the founder of Finnish-Swedish modernism. Her free verse was unique in the Swedish literature as there were only a few attempts of using this kind of versification before Södergran. After the publication of her debut collection “Poems” Finnish-Swedish modernists began employing free verse more broadly. The sources of inspiration are listed in the article and possible reasons for choosing free verse are revealed. Her own understanding of the concept defined in the introductory remark to the collection “The September Lyre” has aroused a particular interest. The translated version of the introductory remark is compared with the original text and the result shows that the poetic terms used in the text are perceived by the author in a different way.
