Petrozavodsk State University, ekaterina.morozova.karelia@gmail.comPetrozavodsk State University, oshukov@gmail.comAnnotation: The paper analyzes the visual aspects of W. C. Williams’ poetry within the framework of the intermediality concept. Drawing on research literature and personal letters and memoirs of W. C. Williams, the paper discusses the phenomenon “readymade” as a form-generating principle in the American modernist poetry. The analysis of Williams’ poem “The Great Figure” proves that the “readymade” technique, which Williams adopted from visual arts of the early 20th century, becomes a structural and meaning-generating device in W. C. Williams’ poetry. Close analysis of the poem reveals the main principles of the technique implementation and its functions in the text. Identifying the specifics of this phenomenon seems relevant and develops new approaches in modernist poetry studies. Petrozavodsk State University, balzhinyam.olya@outlook.comAnnotation: The article analyzes the basic principles of depicting a «new person» in A. Platonov's novel «Happy Moscow». The subject of study was the figurative system of the work, which is considered in the context of the ideological and artistic concept of the «builder of socialism» in Soviet literature of the 1930s. The ideological core of the image of the «new» person is loyalty to the cause of socialism, collectivism, placing the public above the personal. During the study, the following conclusions were made: the Platonic image does not fit into the scheme of a person's identity to an idea. The author experiments artistically, drawing different versions of the «new person» in «Happy Moscow». The main character Moscow Chestnova and the male characters Bozhko, Sambikin and Sartorius, who are in love with her, believe in the ideals of socialism and strive for their embodiment, but they go in different ways in life and achieve contradictory, if not opposite to dreams, results. In the course of the narration, the Soviet myth about the «new person» and the society of «happiness» is destroyed. To preserve and augment humanity in a person, one needs a soul, a heart, a conscience - these traditional categories and cultural values are the basis of the concept of a person in Happy Moscow. Key words: «new person», Soviet literature of the 1930s, socialist realism, opposition «new – old», Platonov, «Happy Moscow». Text (russian) References |

COMICS: DYNAMICS OF VERBAL AND VISUAL INTERCONNECTIONS IN THE FORMATION OF A MEDIUM
Petrozavodsk State University, potashova.a@gmail.comPetrozavodsk State University, oshukov@gmail.comAnnotation: The article discusses core problems in the field of contemporary comics studies through the lens of the correlation between the verbal and the visual in the language of this medium. The issue has not found a comprehensive and generally recognized interpretation in scholarly studies yet; meanwhile, several existing research perspectives neglect the peculiarities of interconnections between the visual and the verbal in comics and tend to contrast these two constructive elements of the single multimodal language instead. The article problematizes such an unambiguous opposition and presents an overview of the interactions between the (so-called) verbal and visual elements of comics in the process of the medium formation from the late 19th century to the 1990s. Thereby, the paper proves the inaccuracy of popular opinions, according to which comics a) may be sufficiently described as the product of interaction between words and images, and b) may be adequately assessed utilizing purely literary conventions. Focusing on the example of several pieces that mark the milestones in the evolution of the medium, the article analyzes some of the features that reveal their potential most fruitfully in the multimodal narrative of comics. Based on this analysis, the paper provides a working definition of the medium and outlines its specific language characteristics.
