TRANSFORMATION OF CATEGORY ‘HUMAN DESTINY’ IN GERMAN LITERATURE FROM ENLIGHTENMENT TO POSTMODERNISM ERA
Petrozavodsk State University, milorada07@mail.ruPetrozavodsk State University, 1389sad@mail.ruAnnotation: The article is concerned with the ‘aspiration’ category in human nature as the main line of conduct heading a human destiny. Based on two great works of the German literature - «Faust» by I.W.Goethe and «Parfum» by Patric Susskind - the main characters and their destiny were examined, exactly in the meaning how they meet challenges and achieve their goals using their personal qualities. First of all the category of aspiration correlating with the intention of achieving something, investigated by Aristoteles, was examined - as a morphological concept reflecting an essential connection between reality and cognition process. The main focus on how this category was actualized in the history of culture and literature attracted our particular attention to these two works, which represent two epochs - European enlightenment and postmodernism. Based on the texts of these two authors representing their time, a broad cultural European background was described with the specific attention to the literature directions, arisen in XVIII-XX. century. The paper deals with the detection of intertextual connection between these two works, for they are suggested as the brightest representatives of the above mentioned literature directions. Following a transformation process of aspiration in human destiny, as it comes in Goethe’s work proclaimed as a ‘fatal desire’, we determined the same category in P.Susskind’s novel as a transformed phenomenon, which transformation is caused by great changes of human values in the postmodernism era. Based on the analyses of the both texts a general conclusion was made concerning the suggested point of view: the classical human values have been replaced by a demon person in the postmodern time. As a literature method, a suggested category considered as a morphological one in a human destiny, would be productive in studying different literatures, epochs and characters on different stages of the human culture. Key words: category, destiny, aspiration, Enlightenment, Postmodernism, transformation, values, characters, cult of rationality. Text (russian) References |
